Problem is basically in the title.
Tranny works fine when I'm driving around town, but above 55mph or so my car won't go into Overdrive about 90% of the time, it stays in 4th gear.
If I cruise up to 45 slowly it will drop into overdrive every time, but if I pull up to 55 or 60 it just stays in 4th.
Anyone know what can cause this?
i think i got the same problem my car rides on high RPMs no matter what it always seems like 3rd gear....(4th is over drive)
buy the way i was curious batmobile how did you get your speedo recalibrated after the gear cuz im gonna order the 373 and LSD Zexel Torsen From Texas-Speed and how much it run ya for the gear install cuz one of the best guys in the state told me $276...
4th shouldn't be over drive for you, we have the same tranny.. I've tested it out On the shifter, there is 1-2-3 and D. Drop it down in 3rd and let the car chill, then shift into drive it will shift into 4th then shift again into OD
But anyway, my speedometer fix was $100. I bought the TechEdge Mini-Speedometer Recalibration Controller from www.intense-racing.com/. It was a B*TCH to install because the instructions that came with it weren't for a firebird, then I went and bought a manual for my car and the wiring in there didn't even help either! But yeah, it works ok. The only weird thing is that 2 times now I start my car and drive somewhere and notice my speedo isn't working. I have to pull over, turn the car off, then turn it right back on and it work fine after that. So I don't know if its something that happened to the thing or what...
And for my gear install I paid $120. My dad has a lot of friends in town and one of the guys the specialized in rearends and transmissions does side work at his house so I took it to the guys house and he did it for cheap. If a shop is telling you $276, that is pretty cheap... it's about a 5 hour job. Mechanics get about $70 or $75 an hour here so thats an easy $350 already. I would make sure the right guy installs them though so you don't have to deal with any noises and stuff. And buy the more expensive synthetic Red Line gear oil... only need 2 quarts.
I paid $362 for my install. Little higher than what I have seen other people pay but I got them installed by someone I absolutely trusted. I know they did a good job. The gears don't make any sort of noise at all.
Having some shifting woes right now but I am hoping the custom programming I am getting fixes that.

your kidding right? it goes 1,2,3,OD, it does not shift again like you said, it only seems like it because the torque converter is lockin up and you lose rpm's. so maybe thats your problem, the torque converter is not locking up, are you getting worse gas mileage?

are you kidding???? all 4L60-E trannys have 4 gears....thats right 4 gears!!! then, of course, there is the converter/OD which isn't a gear but makes it feel as if it shifts again. so, it goes 1-2-3-4-OD!!! if you only feel it get to 4th and then nothing else there are a few problems!! 1. your converter isn't working. 2. you are reading the rpm's incorrectly or you are having trouble feeling/hearing the OD kick in.
as for the problem of OD not working all of the time. the problem is either the converter or just a bad solenoid. i'd replace the TCC solenoid first just to be sure. i guess it could have a wiring problem but thats highly usually unless you've been messing around under tha pan.

Overdrive is simply a gear that has a ratio numerically smaller than 1.0. The TC is not a gear, and therefore not overdrive. 4th gear in your auto is 0.70:1, which makes it an Overdrive gear.
