  • Locker rear results and review

Well, I made a post a while ago about it.

    www.powertrax.com

I needed a 3 series carrier w/ an open differential.

The powertrax unit came to $407 from summit racing.

I've already put about 200 miles on it and a couple passes at the track.

Yes, I can definately hear it unlock and lock. But, my car only has 1 sparco evo seat, no sound deadening, and light weight carpet so w/ a full interior car it might not be heard.

It is not annoying loud, but I can hear it.

Now, around town driving, first thing I noticed is before I want to floor it I have to make sure it is locked. If not, it spins one tire then a loud bang is heard and the other tire locks. I made that mistake twice.

How to lock it: As I roll up to a light I just make sure the car is completely straight and I wack the gas pedal a bit. When it is unlocked the car will want to twist. When it locks, you know because the car just wants to go straight.

Cruising around town: it kinda sucks when going around a turn because it is unlocked and if you hit the gas a bit, one wheel spins. It is a bit annoying, but I'll deal with it.

Track results: I just roll up and make sure I am stright before the water box, roll through and tap the gas. I hit the line locks and let loose. Both tires spin equally. I also make sure the rear is locked by tapping the throttle before staging. I also did a TQ arm at the same time. The car launches nice, even and stright.

    I have yet to spray w/ it, but N/A 1.88 w/ 3:23's and on;y 170 RWHP isn't half bad.

If anyone has questions ask away.

Oh, and I went up to our local street racing the night I got it installed. MANY people could hear it unlocking and locking.

    Well, I'm happy

No, I do NOT suggest this for a daily driver.

It would SUCK in rain and snow because you could not really lock it and it would be a 1 wheel wonder.

Just tapping the gas pedal down 1 inch will give it enough to lock it on dry pavement

How does it unlock? does it wait until you're no longer at WOT, or not putting a lot of power through it, and just randomly unlock? I don't plan on one, just curiousity I guess.

Go to the link above, it explains it.

Basically, straight line it is locked.

As soon as I make a turn it unlocks

Thanks for the review.....I have a 2 series carrier o ith 3.08's that got upgraded to 3.42. Im currnently a one wheel wonder and lauching with boost is too much for my wonderous wheel.

Will this locker you got work for my situation as well? If so ... Do you remember the order number....There was like 20 different ones on summit and none of them said chevy.....mostly chysler.

              Thanks for any help.

With the expense of the power trax and the fact that you have decided a long time ago to forgo some streetablity for the sake of acceleration did you ever consider ARB. You want your diff locked.....flip a switch. I have no idea if an ARB locker would even be feasable.... just asking.

james...your car is an auto ....so how would you suggest a manual to lock it?

To all, this is a mod I DO NOT suggest to anyone.

I did not want an air locker due to added weight of an air pump.

Auto or manual tranny would lock the rear diff the same way, hit the throttle.

Again, this is NOT a mod for a daily driven car.

Good call. locked rear is definately not a good choice for a daily driver. btw they do make an electric locker ... but again this unit does prob. wieght more than the ptrax. i know your car is on a serious diet.

it's good to hear that it is working for you

maybe i'm not understanding something here....but...how would blipping the throttle in a manual have anything to do w/ the rear? do you mean...kinda drop it for a sec?

:( james, im sure your bird is fast but arent you kinda dissapointed that you basically ruined your firebird by treating it like a real drag car and tearing it apart, all that just to run 11s-12s :( im sure you even feel worse knowing a full interiored ls1 runs that with just boltons, yes it is indeed faster to run 13s in a v6 but put that cash in a v8 and its more impressive running 10s period, in full trim :( man your bird was sweet :( my deepest sympathies

I'm quite well known in the f body community

I've had MANY people who recognize the car from all the magazines I've been in.

Doy you know HOW COOL it is to have people walk up to you and say.... hey, your that v6 guy in the 12's.... or.... your that v6 guy in the magazine?????

                            I say, F*CK the V8

I have NOT ruined the bird.

To ME, it is a KICK *** car.

NO ONE else's opinions mean anything to me.

My V8 chevelle..... EVERYONE has done that.

14.0 N/A in a V6.... not too many people out there who can do that.

Mid 12's on an open rear.......NO ONE that I know here can do that.

YOU probably don't think neon's are SEXY either

formanator00, i think you have missed the point of having and enjoying a car.
if all you are worried about is what woudl be the fastest way to spend money you can go out and float a loan on an enzo and have the last laugh on all the peopel who modded Z06 vettes and vipers.
if, on the other hand, you woudl like to play with a car and enjoy the **** out of it without remorse, choose a car and do whatever makes you happy in it.
james has a cool car and i have seen him completely own more than a few LS1's at teh track. god, the look on the guys faces after he beats them is priceless. it is the classic "WTF? i jsut lost to a damn V6?" lol, cracks me up everytime.
