• 5 Speed Tranny noise

Hi Guys,
I just signed up on this forum, and wanted to say hello to everybody. However, I do have a tech. question also. I just picked up an 02' v6 Camaro with a 5-speed. I've noticed that when I am at a stop and I press in the clutch pedal that there is a ticking sound. I have an appointment to bring it back to the dealer next week, but I was wondering if anybody had any thoughts as to what this noise is, or if it is normal? Thanks for your help.

First of all, welcome aboard. I'm a new owner myself, and am stoked that I found this place. 2nd of all, thanks. I thought I was going crazy, cuz no one else could hear it. But yeah, only when the clutch is in, and sometimes @ higher RPM's (40 mph @ 3000 RPM in 3rd especially). Anyone out there, please help us rookies. And Ed, lemme know what your shop says, cuz my dealer seems to have a bunch of chuckleheads in the service dept.

Hey Dewey, Thanks for the welcome. I'm pretty glad myself that I found this place too!! I'll definetly let you know what the dealer says. They have some really good mechanics there that I trust. When I was telling them about it over the phone they said that it could possibly be something to do with the through-out bearing. I picked up the car three weeks ago with 6 miles on it, and it has been making that noise since day one.

I have the same thing on my car. I notice it alot more when I am at the McDonalds drive through because it echo's off the walls. But I have the same ticking sound on my car. Sounds almost like an exhaust rattle or something. Very strange. I have had it for long as I can remember and it has had no problems. But please please Let us know what your mechanic says about it. Thanks.

Welcome Aboard, always nice to see new v6 fbody owners around here.

Oh, and mine is exactly the same exact time my clutch engages. If the pedal is part way down but not engaged it wont do it. But its seems to do it right when it engages. Or disengages i mean. Is yours the same way?

That sounds like it might be the throw out bearing on the clutch. It's a PITA to install because you have to remove the whole tranny to get to it.

Is it just me or is this mostly happening to the 2002? I know I am having tranny problems which hopefully will get fixed next week when they tear my tranny apart.

From how you explained the sound, my car also makes it when I press the clutch in. I have a 2000 Camaro. Before though, I had a 96 Camaro and it did the same thing. I've had no problems with my tranny on my 2000 camaro and I never had any problems on my 96 Camaro and I put the 96 Camaro through hell, :D I'm way easier on my 2000 though. Just figured I'd let yeah know, the noise also comes from earlier models, instead of just the 02 models. As for the rattle noise that you hear when you are at a drive through, I think that'z from your exhaust line somewhere. Probably the cat, or the metal shields above the manifolds. Well, somewhere in that area. ;)

Thanks for the replies guys...It sounds as though there are a bunch of us that hear this noise. I guess it makes me feel a little better that it is not something majorly wrong with only my tranny. I'll make sure to post what the dealer says about it next week. Maybe it's just the way they are set-up.

yes please post when you have more info. I would assume its no big deal because it has happend to me for so long and I havent had any problems. I would also assume its ok because it happens to so many of us. But please let us know.

Its *normal*

Mine makes that whine/tick sound with the clutch in too - do not fear nothing is broken.

Yep. Mine makes the same tick.

I imagine its the hydraulic clutch assembly.

Yep ... Normal ...

Mine makes the same sound any time the clutch is depressed. If you let out the clutch with the tranny in neutral and engine running it goes away. I also noticed it in the drive thru lane :D

I've been real hard on mine and it now has almost 90K miles on it with no problems (yet).
