Double clutching the 1-2 shift...

Jsut cruising around town... would it be beneficial on helping the synchros last a bit longer?

I know its not neccessary, but my car goes into gear so much smoother on a double clutch before I down shift it... Was wondering if doing it on the 1-2 upshift might make my transmission last a little longer, because I do have times when I beat it to hell, and I have been known to damage the 2nd gear synchro, on T5s numerous times...


I am just curious if it is somethign that helps out even slightly...

i do it some times to get a nice pull going into second but other then that i just slam it in there and make it srceam lol

also i did it for one tank of gas every time i shifted if i could (gdid it about 97% of the shifts) i got about 2-3 more MPG

i also notice to skip gears, 1-3 or 3-5 some time 2-4 its alot smoother to double clutch it too....

Yeah I definitely noticed that as well... Seems like it makes sense doing it in order...

I figure ever thing I can do to save the tranny... especially everything related to the 1-2 shift.

Usually the purpose of double clutching is to match flywheel speed with clutch disk/input shaft speed during downshifts to minimize drivetrain shock, make downshifts quicker, and keep rpm's matched. Doing this on the upshift is usually not needed because the natural deceleration of the flywheel between shifts drops the flywheel speed down to somewhere pretty close to input shaft speed. (due to gear reduction in tranny) I notice that if I am shifting casually, I barely need to tap the clutch to pull it out of gear and into the next- the revs are usually matched well (if I'm paying attention) and sometimes you hardly even feel the shift. I doubt taking the time to double clutch on the upshift is going to do anything to save your synchros- really the only thing that hurts synchros is speed shifting all the time.

ok makes sense... I am anot an expert on trannies... but I know a little. I know and have shifted it without a clutch but not nearly as smooth as using it...

I know powershifting is what really kills it but I am trying to eliminate every possible way I can damage them [img]smile.gif[/img] so I cna powershift when needed.

ya i can no longer powershift into 2nd gear when racing.. it sucks.

how much you think to get that fixed?

A T-5 costs $400-$500 :( stupid synchros

You don't doubleclutch on upshifts. Don't give me that "Steve McQueen did it in Le Mans" crap either.

Shift up at the rate you feel most comfortable with. Too fast will smash up syncrhos, too slow will burn the clutch. Eric, you're an M5 expert, certainly you know how to best do it.

Being "gentle" with the shift lever will probably save the synchros and forks the most. Let it slide in when it's ready.

And always doubleclutch on the downshifts, it's certainly more fun that way!

Eric, one thing you need is an aftermarkter shifter with an externally adjusted stop. The factory shifter relies on internal stops in the transmission. That's one thing that you tore up on your last T-5. The factory stops aren't that strong. All of you guys who like to beat up on t-5s need an aftermarket shifter asap!

Note: The Pro 5.0 has stops (and I have it!), I'm not sure about hurst or the ripper.

hehe how about I broke both my consoles on my 94 and '00 with my stock shifter [img]smile.gif[/img]
