The fluid level needs to be right below the top hole. How are you going to know where to stop if you don't get under the car and take that bolt out?

You can go ahead and put some on your shifter where it goes into the tranny. That'll be fine, and no need to add anymore unless like he said, you check your level. And yes, Dexron Mercon 3 is what you need to use:)

You can use the fluid capacity numbers from autozone.

But how will you know how much fluid is already in the trans if you don't go under the car to drain it?

Oh I though you meant draining it, and then seeing if you could fill it from the shifter area.
I didn't know you wanted to just "top it off".
Yeah you have to get under the car sooner or later.
When I have done my clutch, well twice, I always fill it from the shifter area, its easier. But the tranny is always empty then.
