  • trouble getting it in gear....T5

wuts up guys... about a year ago i installed my hurst comp plus throw shifter, and i dont know if its a common occurrance, but sometimes (particularly after driving relatively hard) it is rather difficult to slip the shifter into first gear. In addition, sometimes it doesn't even slip into reverse without running through the gears once or twice. Has anyone had this problem. The car only has 16,600 miles on it. Could it be a throwout bearing? or fluid problem? is it something i should even be concerned with? any help is greatly appreciated...

Sometimes it is hard to get into gear. Not only 1-st, but for me it's also 2-nd. Not always, just sometimes. Also, reverse doesn't have synchros, which means you'll have to put it on 5th first, then in reverse.

I had a problem like that a few months ago. Turned out the clutch wasn't disengaging completely. If I was on a level road in neutral, then forced it into 1st with the clutch pedal down, I would start moving. Had the clutch replaced and it's fine now. Would be kind of surprised if your clutch is already going out, though.

        Try bleeding the clutch reservoir.

Or you may have low clutch fluid.

how do i go about checking the clutch fluid, and/or bleeding the system? i dont think it's my clutch not disengaging, cuz the symptoms described don't apply in my situation..i dont start moving when it's in 1st and the clutch pedal is down. It is just more difficult than i feel comfortable with to slip the shifter into 1st sometimes.

I think check your fluid would be the first thing.....

I wouldn't thnk that your synchros would be going out this soon but....... it could be possible.

Also, in my Camaro owners manual it states that "If the transmission is hard to get into first gear, put it in neutral, release the clutch, apply the clutch and try again." Something about that makes me snicker a bit. Mine does it qutie frequently actually. I've gotten used to it. The transmission acts perfectly fine any other time. The T-5 is an ancient design, it makes noise, it acts quirky sometimes. But dont abuse it and it will last forever. It's one of those things that makes me sigh and say "I love my Camaro." ;)
