I just kinda went through this...
There are a of solenoids, you need to find out exactly which one went bad so you can replace it otherwise you will be f*cked with a $400 package of solenoids.
I am not sure if the tranny has to come up, but I am like 80% sure it does.

There are 6 solenoids total. You don't have to drop the transmission to replace any of them. They are all accessible just by removing the pan. If it's a problem with 4th gear, it is probably the 3-4 valve. It runs 20 bucks from the dealer, or 11 from gmparts.

      GM PART # 10478131
      CATEGORY: All
PACK QTY: 1 CORE CHARGE: $0.00
      GM LIST: $20.06
      OUR PRICE: $11.43
      DESCRIPTION: VALVE SOL

It is pretty easy to replace. In this picture, you can see the 3-4 solenoid, it's on the right side, there are two black things on the edge that look identical with wires running to them, it's the higher of the two. There is a little clip that holds it in, you pull the clip, unhook the electrical connection, slip the solenoid out, and slip the new one in, replace the clip, and reconnect the connection.
