  • I need your help! Differential Q's..

Can anyone help me with finding links to differential pictures and/or diagrams showing the various parts? I am looking to install my slp take off myself but I have no idea what half the terms mentioned in all the install guides mean. Pictures pointing out the parts mentioned would really help me figure out what the heck I am doing.

Thanks for the link Matt. I'm still a bit confused though. This is the link I am going by as a guide for removing the differential:

        http://www.fastblackcar.com/camaro/v6/lsd.htm

Any idea what is being talked about in the above link about a "scew that holds the pinion shaft in" is in that diagram?

Also, what are "bearing races"? Are they even on the diagram you provided?

Looks like that diagram does not show the Pinion Shaft or the retaining bolt.

Here's a pic of the regular differential:
          http://home.cfl.rr.com/mkaprocki/Camaro/case.JPG

The round hole is where the pinion shaft goes through the case. There is a bolt that goes through the shaft from the side. In that pic, you can see where I had to drill out the case to remove that bolt (the bolt sheared off inside the case).

The bearing races in that diagram are the Bearing Caps and Bearing Adjusting Nut. They just slide over the bearing on the sides of the diff.

Sweet! Thanks a TON! I might actually attempt to do this myself this weekend now that the fog is clearing.

It's really not that hard of an install if you're not changing gears. This was the first real work I'd ever done on a car. Just follow the instructions and it's nothing.
Another thing that really helps is to get a Haynes manual or GM Service Manual set. The GM one is great because it has all the torque specs and step-by-step instructions to do everything.
If you need any help doing it, just let me know.

If you are changing gears and the differential, I strongly suggest that you bring it to a shop. This kind of work is a specialty and requires special skills and tools if you want it to work right when you are done. Shimming the pinion gear bearing may prove to be beyond someone who is not properly trained or tooled. I don't mean to come off as insulting, but this is just one of those jobs most of us are better off having a specialist do, like tire balancing or alignments.

Agreed. The shop where I used to work would not touch bad pinion bearings or anything relating to installing the pinion gear due to the touchy nature of the alignment. The only thing relating to the pinion that we would go near was the pinion seal, but for everything else we either recommended a specialty shop or provided the option of swapping in a new or used differential assembly.

As for pictures of the various parts, I found this website a bit helpful:

                  http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/d35-1.htm

Not a Camaro differential, but same idea.

I pried it out from the bottom. It's still a pain in the *** to get out, though.

Well I got the PITA installed in about 9 hours working time this weekend. Biggest problems for me was getting the stinking 10 bolts off for the ring gear and abs reluctor ring and then getting the stupid thing pressed back on properly. Took me about 4 hours total to get that right (I wanted to make sure it was perfect).

One thing I might add to the instructions listed above is to REMOVE THE PANHARD ROD! Otherwise you are going to fight and fight with that thing to get it reinstalled.

Also, the easiest way to get the old carrier out is to use a 2ft prybar and stick the hooked end back behind the carrier and just heave... it will pop right out. Just make sure you are paying attention so that when the two bearing caps and shims jump out, you remember which side they went on. Other than that, its not too bad. Just be prepared to stink for the next two days as you are going to get oil on yourself and that stuff really smells horrible.

When you say reinstalled you mean the new carrier right??
