when i installed my shifter today, t-5, i didn't take out the plastic cup bit that the shifter sits in, as it looks to be in perfect condition. the instructions say to re-grease a replacement one where needed. i didn't need to take it out and grease it up, did i... i dont think this matters, as it is already greased up, and is in perfect working condition...
I took out the bushing to inspect it, cleaned it really good with brake cleaner, and re-greased it with some synthetic grease that one of the mechanics had laying around. I also greased up the "ball end" of the shifter too. It shouldnt make a whole lot of difference, since trans fluid will eventually get up there and lube the bushing. But you can never have enough grease. ;) I noticed that on the drive home, the shifter "loosened" up a bit (especially after driving through downtown Baltimore during rush hour) and it just pops into gear without much effort at all now. I love how it feels, so much better than stock and MUCH more like a sports car. Good luck.
By the way, did you take the center console completely out? There wasnt a mechanic in the whole shop that had the proper tool to remove the damn set screw in the e-brake handle!!! I had to do it with the console part-way out. A bit of a pain, but otherwise the install was easy.
