  • Question about gear ID

I have a question. My 97 bird has 3.08's stock. Thing is everyone talks about how 3.08's are slow, and that you cant spin your tires with them and that acceleration isn't that great.

I was just wondering if anyone knew if I could tell if my car had the gears replaced by the previous owner (I've only had my car 4 months now). I know it doesn't have lsd, only one side spins, but when I punch it you still get thrown back into your seat, not to mention I haven't lost a race to anyone yet and everyone talks about racing being difficult with 3.08s. My acceleration feels pretty quick, I was just wondering if anyone knew how I could tell if my gears weren't stock.

    Thanks

I'm not 100% sure how to ID them, but I know I mistakenly bought 3.42's for a 2 series carrier (like you have) from someone on the board, when I have the 3 series. If you're interested in them for dirt cheap, let me know.

If your car was not recalibrated for the gears, then you car would be traveling slower than what your speedometer says you are. So have a friend pace you, or drive past one of thoes police radar trailers and see if your speedo is off. If it is off, find the percentage it is off. 3.23 5% off, 3.42 = 10% off, 3.73 = 10% off

If your car was recalibrated we can assume that the RPMs and MPH are acurate. In that case, take a look at this chart and find at what RPMs you are at what speed, and find what your gearing is that way.

I have 3.08s right now, and I can still spin off the line too.
