I was told getting the "true" stall out of a converter is by using a transbrake. What is it? I've heard yay and nay on this. What are the pros and cons and who has it on their ride?

So, must of guys here that have high stall converters don't have true stalls correct? I emailed Edge and this was their response:
"The stall math we advertise for our performance converters is based on
"true stall" and is best measured in the field using a transbrake. The foot
brake in your late model car will get you very close to true stall but fall
short by 300-500rpm.
What would I recommend? I recommend a tire that delivers good to great
traction, and STR between 2.37 - 2.51 depending on how violent you want the
launch. Stall math in the 3.8 is varied because the torque curve is fairly
constant between 3300-4500. If the 1/4 mile is the main goal and you still
want the street manners then 32-3400 rpm of "true stall" is the compromise."<b>99 Camaro Z28 A4</b><br />R.I.P. 00 Firebird 3.8<br />14.89 @ 90, 2.03 60\'

The transbrake engages first gear and reverse at the same time, effectively keeping your car from moving at all. Let off the button and it disengages reverse and you're off. I think "true stall" with the brake is slightly higher than foot braking because the converter overcomes the brakes, spinning your tires before it actually gets to the top stall amount it can (other factors too I'm sure - TONS of things to consider - car weight, torque, yadda, yadda). The transbrake lets the converter come up as high as it can since the tranny is locked and won't move.
They are definately fun - have one on our 69, but it is strictly a drag car. I think that would be towards the end of my list for a "real" street car (not a race car with license plates). Can't imagine it would be good to accidentally hit that button as you were tooling down the interstate...
Oh yea - tranny cooler is a must - they make alot of heat.

Yea, but I'm gonna be mainly on street tires unless some nittos pop up. That's STR he recommended for my application. What do you think?<b>99 Camaro Z28 A4</b><br />R.I.P. 00 Firebird 3.8<br />14.89 @ 90, 2.03 60\'
