  • Speedo w/Gear Changes

I have seen several references to recalibrating the speedo after changing rear end gears. This makes no sense - gears will affect only RPM - speedo is affected by changing wheel/tire size to bigger or smaller diameter. Am I not correct - after changing the gearset, acceleration will improve; RPM levels will be higher in each gear at a given speed; but the speedo will be the same as before.

The computer calculates the speed of the car by the speed of the tranny. Changing the rear end gears screws up all the calculations, because for a given RPM you'll now be going a different speed. RPM will show correctly no matter what gear set you have.

So how do you recalibrate - I am going from 3.23's to 3.73's and the RPM difference in 5th is about 500 across the range.

Your RPM will not be affected. It will show the correct RPM all the time.

Your speedo will be 13% off. When you see 70 mph on the speedo, you'd really be going 60 mph.

You need to either have the PCM tuned (by a company such as Fastchips) or install a device to correct the signal.

Here's a post that refers to it:

There's others there if you try a search for something like "3.4 speedo".
