  • Differential leak

I recently changed the fluid in the rear end, but when I was putting the cover back on and putting on the bolts I noticed one of the top bolts would not tighten. So I used a bigger bolt with some silicone for the threads, the kind that seals when it heats up. So I filled it with fluid drove it around and no leaks. This was about a month ago and today I noticed that it was leaking from that bolt. Can anyone help me out on how to fix the leak?

The 2 bolts at like 2 and 10 o'clock are longer to hold the e-brake cable brackets in place. Did you happen to use a short bolt in that position?

off topic: I see alot of stock rears, with old oil on the rear. As if the factory didnt tighten it enough, or the stock gasket doesnt work good.

So the threads are stripped then on the differential case? Damn, that must have taken some doing. Might have to retap it with new threads and use a bigger bolt.

Most rears leak at the pinion, not at the cover. They usually only leak at the cover if someone takes it off and damages the gasket, then doesn't replace it or tries to use RTV.

I replaced the gasket and also used rtv. Was I not supposed to? Can I do anything else besides having to retap to stop it from leaking?

I just replaced the gasket on my new rear. I asked whether I should put in in dry or use something and was told that RTV can soften the gasket material. If I wanted to use something to hold the gasket to the cover they recommended a spray-on contact cement.

I put it in dry, tightened it down and no sign of any leaks or seeping yet. Now the pinion seal is another matter.
