Never tried. I'll keep that in mind though.

Any v8 rear end for 93 - 97 should fit? For $150 it seems worth it. The Eaton Posi I was looking at was $300 (I think).

Can you explain 10 bolt vs 12 bolt to me. You can assume I'm a moron by asking that question.

    a jump? please explain.

Dude, my wife said she would buy me a used rear end for x-mas if I give her all of the specs. Anything else I should know to make sure she gets the right thing?

V8 rear end, 93 - 97. 3.42 or higher gears. discs. What else? I have a traction control warning light. Does that play into the new axle at all?

If she buys this for me, the next time I am in FL, drinks are on me.

She found a salvage yard with a 3.23 rear end.

While reading about 3.23s, I ask her to check my door panel just to make sure I had 3.08s. Turns out, my code is GU5 - so I HAVE 3.23s. Oi.

So will the upgrade to 3.42/LSD still be worth it?

      Thoughts?

Did I mention, my wife .

I meant jump as an improvement, its not the end of the world imporvement but an improvement.

an eaton will be better then a zexel, or a auburn(found stock in f-bodies) but money comes in to play.

yeah all 3.4Ls have 3.23s... I went from 3.23-3.42s it was a difference shaved a few 1/10ths off my 1/4, hard to say how much to gears because I did a steel driveshaft and lsd at the same time.

I also slapped some 3.42s on my 3.8 over my 3.23s definite little gain, but once again I went from a stel to a ls1 drivesahft at the same time so that might have affected the improvement.

If its the normal "low trac" ligth thats a non-traction control car.

Traction control cars have 2 seperate brake lines running from the front of the car to the rear. Non-tcs cars have only 1 then it branches into two.

another difference is tcs cars have 2 abs rings at the ends of the axles near the wheel hubs. non-tcs car its located inside the differential on the diff.

difference between 10 bolt and 12-bolt is... the 12 bolt is a hell of a lot stronger and a hell of alot more expensive to buy parts for and people have had losses in ET do to excess weight. You could probably buy 10-10 bolts for the price of a 12-bolt.

Besides you also have a 5-speed, and imo your transmission will break before you kill an average 10-bolt.

Example I have broken 1 10-bolt but it was leaking fluid and had like 100k on it. But I have broken 3 T5s.

Does not seem worth the trouble for 3.42s (I apoligize for my mixup). Might as well stick with my eaton/3.73 plan and spend a crap load more money. Do the gears for now, and then the motor when I can save up some more $. The swap was a good idea when I thought I was coming from 3.08s.

Yeah, I knew the car didn't have traction control. That light is a real waste. By the time it flashes to tell me the a$$ kicked out, I'm already chasing the thing sideways. I should yank the fuse for that thing.

          Thanks again.

Its cool... just saying it may not be a huge gain, but its a gain. And if you price it out, its the way I woudl go.

But like I said I am cheap

              Eric,
Let me ask yet another question. If I did the axle swap, would a new 3.73 ring gear work with whatever diff came in the axle? As long as I order the right parts, it should, right?

I am thinking, a local junkyard has the exact axle for my car - 3.23s, discs - I need to verify the diff, the wife didn't ask. If it comes with the posi (auburn) and I can get that cheap - that still saves me a bunch of $$ over buying a new eaton ($400+). Then I pony up for the 3.73 and the install (ouch). Yeah, the auburn is not as nice as the eaton, but I could save a few hundred bucks.

The wife is still willing to buy the axle for x-mas if I can make up my frickin mind soon. Then I lose my XXX lap dance, but I gain a project for the day after x-mas.

shoudl work as long as its a 3 series carrier(3.23+ I believe)

just to warn you there seem to be more zexels then auburns out there.

I think its a decent idea. I'd consider it.

in regards to that 3.23 disk axle, I remember when I was looking thru junk yards I learned that a 3.23 rear end didnt come with posi. A 3.23 with disks means it came off an RS not a Z28 or trans am, this in turn means that the axle wont have posi.

In regards to your question, yes you can swap out gears and leave the diff in there, thats what i did over this summer when i installed my 4.10s.
SLP CAI, RK Sport headers, P&Ped heads and intake, GT2 cam, Upgraded valvetrain, Z28 rear axle with 4.10s Tx Spd tune, Z06 rims, 2.5\" exhaust to flowmaster, 160* thermo, B&M ripper, upgraded ignition, rockford fosgate 12\" with sony xplode amp and HU.
