• Ok to run LSD without reluctor ring???

Well, i'm about done installing the LSD in my car. Problem is, the reluctor ring broke when I was tring to get it off the other differential. So, I'm putting everything back in, except for the snapped reluctor ring. I did a search and found someone saying it had to do with ABS. They called it a ABS reluctor ring. I looked at the top of the housing and there is a sensor up on top that leads to the brake lines. So I'm guessing without the reluctor ring it will not splash the oil on the sensor and there for I will not have ABS??? Is it alright to run the car with out the reluctor ring also without the ABS?? I was going to buy one today, but since it is Sat. every place is closed. So, I'll probably order one off SLP, or get one at a dealership Monday. So, the big question is, is it ok to run my car without the reluctor ring??? PLEASE HELP...

It is okay to run without the reluctor ring. As you could see, the ring has teeth on it. The sensor on the top takes a count of the speed of the teeth passing it using a magnet. This tells the ABS controller the speed of the rear wheels. You will not have ABS without the reluctor ring installed.

SideNote: For anyone doing a LSD install...according to the shop manual and Chilton's manual for our car, you SHOULD NOT reuse the old reluctor ring with a new carrier. If the ring is removed, it must be replaced with a new one. This is because it is press fit onto the differential as the ring gear is tightened onto the differential.

Hey, thanks for the info. I took it for a drive last night. I love having LSD, I had it in my 96 Camaro. :D Well, I have a question. When I'm driving down the road and hit around 1500 to 2000 or above RPMs and going like 55 or 60 I hear a whinning/humming noise from the rear. I don't really hear the noise in the first 3 gears due to the fact my exhaust is so loud when I'm pulling out. But, last night coming home I drove slow in 2nd gear and hit 2000 RPMs and I could hear the noise. The noise is not as loud as it was when I was first driving it. I drove it about 50 to 60 miles to where I was going and then when I was coming back home, it seems the noise has fadded a little. I've searched on here and have seen others that have had a whinning noise also. Also, it only makes the noise when I press the gas, when I let off the gas the noise goes away. So, I figure it's the Zexel Torsen. I'm just wondering if that is the sound the Zexel Torsen makes?? Is it normal to hear this noise? Thanks for any help that can be given.

I would say you are hearing the gears whine and not the carrier. Mine have a bit of a whine but I also have 3.73's. You did put the shims back on the same sides that they came off of right? If not that would cause the gears to be set up wrong. That could be "bad news bears" for you.

Well, I drove it Sunday, and the noise is about gone now. You can barely hear it now. I think it was the LSD wearing in maybe?? Yeap, I placed the shims on the sides they came off of. I'm going to be taking everything back out in about 2 or 3 weeks. I've got to install the (ABS) reluctor ring. I've got to order it, so I should have it, in a week or two. That will give enough time for the LSD to wear in. I think someone on here said to change the fluid around 500 miles after you install the LSD anyways. Also, I don't think it's anything major(the noise I'm hearing), it's like a humming noise. I sure hope everything is ok in there. :(

If I remember correctly, you lay the ABS ring on, then put the gear on, and tighten the bolts slowly in a star pattern and then you have an instant press fitting! I had no prob using the same ABS ring.
