  • Why does car downshift for no reason

    My brother has a 95 Mercury Cougar XR-7 V8 with a 4-sp auto

When driving on the highway for about 30-45 mins at 70mph at about 2k rpm it will downshift for no reason and shoot up to about 3k rpm

during this time the car can not speed up at all

but after a couple seconds the car will shift back up a gear and the rpms will come back down

if you keep driving like that it will eventually downshift until its in first gear at about 20 mph at about 3.5k rpm, and will not shift into any higher gear

but driving in the city everything is fine, even for long periods of time

The car only has 68k miles and runs great besides that. The car isnt overheating or anything. Any ideas on whats causing this?

I know its not an fbody, but i didnt want to post in lounge, but feel free to move if needed.

Any opinions or suggestions are appreciated

    thanks, Ryan
