real differential gasket

i think that i'm leaking from there also. i was already planing on do 4.10 gears. so my question to you guys is, with this install kit do i need anyother gaskets?

That looks like it is the pinion gasket. So you would still need a new gasket for the back of the pumpkin. I think thats what you are asking atleast. I know nothing about gear swaps, but if you are opening the pumpkin you should replace that gasket.

yea all you need for the pumpkin is one paper gasket. i got mine at napa for like 3-4 bucks.

I just got your email Kristen. I don't really mess with the gears because you'll need certain tools to rebiuld them, and I don't have those tools. The shims must be precisely re-calibrated, and I have never done that. Basically, I was just plain'ol lazy and bought a complete posi disk rear from a 95 Z28 with the same gear ratio.

If it CAN be done though with standard tools, I hope someone can chime-in and say so... I know that there are some members here that have done it without any issues.

Use some permatex in addition to the gasket for a really good seal.

gear and differential swap requires:
dial gauge indicator w/ magnet base
micrometer
torque wrench
impact gun/wrench
rotary tool/dremel tool for sanding down the inside of the bearing.
They say you can get the bearings off just by putting them in the oven but NO way!! You'll have to take it to a shop to get the bearing pulled off (~$13)

all differentials I've seen that have a gasket install leak. Try this, just run a thick bead of silicone around the differential cover and that'll seal things up nicely.

I just put a rear in my car that had RTV on the cover and was leaking (badly). I cleaned off the cover and housing and used a GM gasket with nothing else on it and it is dry as a bone, no leaks whatsoever. The GM gasket is $8 though, a little more than aftermarket which usually run $3-4. The thing is I think you're supposed to replace the gasket any time the cover is removed but most people reuse them. Might be where a lot of them start leaking.

hehe I had like 4k miles on the gasket and I replaced it...


autozone $3.79 + tax on my reciept. BUT they didn't have any for an 00 or an 02, but they have one for a 96(when I asked them for one)


Don't know why its not in their system but its the same size, same gasket. The computer at MY autozone was wrong.

I didn't even use a gasket. I put silicone on the cover and the housing, let it dry, then bolted up. No leaks.

Tip: I put a very light layer of grease on the (dried) silicone before bolting the cover on. Keeps the two from sticking together if/when you take the cover off again later on. This will also work with a cork gasket, but you'll probably shred the gasket when bolting the cover on, and it isn't re-useable after that.
