  • neone wanting/thinking 3.73 look!!!!

    well alot of ppl are afaris of 3.73 and gas mileage i have recently got 3.73 w/ lsd and here is some info:
    A4
    as of right now i am at 150 miles at 3/4 tank!! i am checking gas mileage as of now!MOSTLY highway
    at a cruise of 70mph i am at 2200-2300 rpm i was at 1900
    at 60 i am at like 1900 rpm!!!
    at around 75-77 is were it starts to hurt!! climbs to around 2500 and higher at 80!!!

    IMO it keeps me outta trouble on highway cause i dont need to go over 75 or so!!! so that is kinda a plus for me!!!

    i figured i would let everyone now how the gears are working out for the ppl who are afraid of them!! if u need to know nething else just lmk!! also if this is a repost of some sort sorry!

    :\ I went from 3.08's w/ open to 3.73 + lsd. I got around 200 miles on this tank and I have 1/4 left. Although, thats cos I beat it like red headed step child. :D

    A great upgrade !

              My car came stock with 3.42s so I'm already at about 2300rpms at 70mph. So I don't really understand how your at 2300rpms with 3.73s. I'd like to go to 3.73s mainly just because I really want an LSD and I might as well throw in the gears while I have it apart. Where did you guys get your gears and lsds from?

                  Auto's use a .70 4th gear and manuals have a .74 5th gear.

                  With 3.42's and 245/50 tires a manual is taching 2325 at 70mph whereas an auto is at 2199.

                  Drop to a 3.73 and the manual goes up to 2536 while the auto is still back at 2399.

                  If you use taller tires (235/55, 255/50) your rpm's are going to be almost 50 less at that speed.

                      What's the talk about 3.73s and 4.10s causing the v6's to fall on their faces at higher rpms, has anyone experienced this? In theory it should cause it to pull harder at higher revs if I am correct. And Ted, LSD is limited-slip differential.

                        i have pics i can proove i am at 2300 rpm at 70 mph i have 275/40/17 tires though!!! but i DO run 2300 rpm

                          Well I run 2300rpms at 70 also.... but I have 275/40/18 on the back and 17's up front. But from what your saying I really won't notice a difference going to 3.73s. That's good I guess.........

                            A 275/40R17 is 25.6" diameter, same as the 245/50R16, so Chet those calcs I did are the same for yours.

                            Kevin, your rear wheel is 1" larger out back, so with 3.73's you would be at 2431 rpms at 70mph.

                            Chris, the only thing a lower gear ratio can hurt is pure top speed. A 4.10 gear ratio can only pull up to 150-160 (depending on trans) until you reach 6000rpm and you run out of gear. A 3.42 is good for 180+ mph but you need to have the horsepower to get there. Our cars are roughly .33 CoD and 21ft² frontal area, so for 3500 pounds (car + driver) we need to make 176rwhp to reach 150. To get to 180 though it jumps to 298rwhp.

                              2431rpms!!! Good lord! So pretty much no more driving on the interstate for me if I get those 3.73s, huh? How much would it be at 60 for me?
