  • Torque Management ? - Basic Overview Please

Oh, I have searched. Seached HPTuners forums as well.

Would anyone care to give an overview of what torque management is? When and why to alter the PCM programing related to it?

I think I have an idea of what it is doing....So, driving normal...(tranny is nearly new and perfect...no problems) Shift from 1st to second then to third. Shifter is in third gear...not 4th. Then there seems to be another shift....? Shifter is still in third...tranny not slipping...just this extra...sorta shift...while car is still in 3rd gear and I am easing off/on gas pedal.

Is this torque management at work? Car does not have traction control. Tires are not spinning...not talking about WOT either. Just normal driving. It does not feel like a normal shift...but something is happening and you can hear the engine tone change.

I may have not explained this well, i will put it another way...

Shifter is in 3rd. I know the difference between giving throttle and having the tranny downshift to second...this is not what I am describing.

car is stopped...shifter in 3rd gear. start off, normal driving...up to 40 mph..auto shifts into 2nd gear, then auto shifts into 3rd gear, (no slipping, etc...normal ok shift) then there will be this other...shift like thing that happens depending on how/if I back off throttle to cruise, etc. You can hear the enging change tone...from rpm change etc. Not dramatic, not like a worn out tranny or anything.

Tranny is good. If in 3rd...40mph or so and punch it...auto downshift to 2nd...car flies. Same if going slower like 20mph or so...punch it, tranny dropps hard into 1st gear...tires spin...rear end wiggles sideways...car realy flies...auto shift hard and fine into 2nd..BAM, continues to fly.

Is the above goofiness 'torque management' at work?

Any basic or advanced feedback appreciated as well as info links, tuneing links, etc.

    TIA G.

Yea, right after I posted all the above it occured to me that it might just be the torque converter...locking/unlocking. I believe the stock converter is about 1800 or so stall. The wierdness happens at low rpm...so maybe it is just the stall...lockup...on the converter as it adjusts to the new low rpm in 3rd gear at low speed such as 40 - 45 mph.

Exactly right. At 30 MPH in third gear is when the verter will lock up.

Torque management is something entirely different. Basically stops you from chirping the tires when shifting.

          Its the converter locking up.

Torque managment is a series of tests the PCM runs to make sure you are not going to trash your transmission (or differential in some cars). If the car sees too much calculated torque, it pulls timing to de-power the car.

My stock PCM was set at 384 ft*lbs of torque but now it is set at 650 ft*lbs. Until I install the jet engine, I should be fine. With the SC, you might be up there in torque but I have no idea how close you might be. If you think you are close and don't care if you trash your tranny, have it tuned out. Its only money.

haha i wasnt sure what it was, but I disabled it, basically with an auto tranny, it doesnt take a long tome to shift, theres no hesitation.. I recommend it, but if you have a 5 speed it doesnt even matter... we need an hptuners section!

You didn't know what it was, but you turned it off anyways? :(

Nah, stock these cars are still nicely powered v6...V6 I say again. Race a similar v6 stang...you will feel pretty darn good. Race a stock v8 stang and you will feel pretty proud.

All the open exhaust and smooth air intake mods in the world will not ADD power to the car...just un hinder some of it. To ge MORE power than stock...you gotta do something in the ADD Power department such as valvetrain, heads, stroker crank (displacement) or Force Feed it.

At that time these suckers realy start to come alive.
