a friend offered to sell me his aluminum driveshaft, but he said it needs new u joints. how much do these cost and what is involved in installing them?

Autozone has them for about $15.
It's good to have a large vise on a workbench to hold the driveshaft steady when doing this.

If the U-joints are stock you will need a propane torch or similar to heat them up. They have injected nylon rings. Heat up the ears of the shaft until the plastic melts and comes squirting out. Then the cups basically fall out with a light tap.
