I have the exact same question. My 5 speed needs some help and I want to beef it up. The T-5 is a very common trans and I have seen a few rebuild kits but would like to know if anybody has tried this.
I believe there was a place that would build them up to be pretty beefy, and you would turn in your tranny as a core replacement.
I forgot the name but you guys should look into what 3rd gen guys are doing...

Oh, wait, thats not it.
I just checked out 5speeds.com. They only sell OEM kits and they are $165 for the T-5. However, that would not be an upgrade.
I think finding a kit will not be a problem, I am just wondering if it is something I could do? I've rebuilt motors so I doubt it could be harder then that???
Has anybody done this or know anybody that has done this?
the thing with rebuilding a tranny is that it's often more than just synchros, etc. that you'll want to replace... shafts and gears come to mind. that's where you start to add up a lot of expense.
EDIT: the TKO is a stronger version of the T-5zWC, rated to 375 lb-ft instead of 300.
when you get in the $2k range have you guys thought of T-56s?
I know people have looked into and were researching it, I did a bit too myself, but figured for the power I was throwing at my car(3.4L) I'd be better off just replacing stockers(mistake)

I think his tranny was $900. do we just need an addapter plate, and maybe a different input shaft?

adapter plate about 3/4 to 1 inch thick
then a custom drive shaft cause the tranny sits back more
you center console has to be cut to alow for the gear shift...
plus a t56 i never found one for less then 1000 bucks...
my dad friend could make me the adapter plate at cost but he needed the car and both tranny's and its was still going to be about 150 for the plate
oh and if you use a V8 clutch (if the fly wheel even bplts up) youd have to get that and get it blanced

I have done some research on this because I need a strong 5 speed for mine as well
Tremec TKO 500 or 600
These trannies will work on our cars.. The only thing is that you will need to get a adapter plate so the tranny sits in straight and not at a 17 degree angle.. TKO's are made to work straight not at a angle.. We will have to use a 3rd gen TKO.. Its like 1500.00 for the tranny and 150.00 for the adapter plate, and you will have to convert it to a external slave since our slave cylinder for the clutch is mounted in the bellhousing and the 3rd gens are in the tranny..
G-force...
This is the route I am taking.. Its 1050.00 for 1-4th gear sets and syncro rebuild kit and this tranny can hold 600 hp.. Stronger input and tail shafts.. I am just going to order the set and get it mailed to the house because I have a good tranny guy here that can build it for me with my spare tranny I have.. If you want them to build it you have to send them your tranny and 1800.00 I think and they will build it for you.. they have a upgraded 5th gear but that is another 200.00 dollars and I dont use 5th gear while racing so I am just going to stick with my stock 5th gear..
G-Force looks like the way to go. I wonder how dificult the rebuild would be? With labor only $250 I might just send it off.
1998 Silverbird, you dynoed with 433rwtq. Did the trans hold up? Has your trans given you any trouble?
Mine is still holding up and I should have similar numbers with 231rwhp (N/A) plus a 100 shot. However, at the track, I have a very hard time getting the car into 2nd gear so I know it will not last forever. I just want to know what yours is doing.
