I've heard doing a swap from 3.08 to 3.42 gears is really worth it, but im confused as to how to do this and how much it'll be? On ebay I found a set of 3.42's for 75$, is this what i'll need? What is LSD? Will that help it to go faster? I tohught all that was , is where you can't peel out with just one tire anymore... ANY help is greatly appreciated!
BTW it says lt1, ls1, will it still work on my car? thanks!!!

a gear swap can be one of the best bangs for the buck you can do. you don't actually increase your HP but you get what you have to the wheels quicker so to speak. a set of gears is not all you will need though, you should also get a Ratech install kit(at least the Complete kit)and if you want posi you will need a posi unit and can probably get one from SLP for like $99(the take off units) or do a search on ebay as there is always one on there.
unless you have the correct tools and know how doing a gear install yourself is not recommended.
the gears for an LT1 or LS1 will work in your car the diffs are all the same and you already have a 3 series carrier since you have 3.08's.
the 3.42's will throw off your speedo and probably the odometer by about 20%. so if you are going 80mph your speedo will read around 96 mph and if you go 10 miles it will register 12 miles on the odometer. the speedo I am sure about the odometer not positive but pretty sure.

So pretty much if you do it yourself you'd be saving some money but you might have some trouble. A good price for a gear install is about $200. $75 for the gears sounds like a pretty good price. If you have drums in the back a good investment might be to buy a whole new rear all together. So youd be saving money because you won't have to change the gears and you'd be getting discs too. You might find someone selling a rear end locally because they're pretty big. Price range would probably be anywhere from $200 to $500.
Edit: Oh yea you asked if they made a big difference. Me and my friend raced several times and we have basically the same car except he has 3.42s and I have 3.08s. He put about 1.5 car lengths ahead of me each time.
