On my way to my first day back in class... I was driving down your standard side street (kinda windy) around 7:45 this morning... and it was COLD... the streets were completely glazed in black ice!
At this one point there were two cars parked up ahead and I didn't realize until it was almost too late that these cars hit each other because of this BAD patch of ice. I applied my brakes but didn't slam on them... even still my car was sliding on this ice patch right into the other cars!!! The car in front of me was sliding forward on this patch of ice also and I see that car go bump... right into the car in front of it and I thought "Hell no... I just got this car back from the body shop as it is!!!"
And that's when I cut the wheel slightly and put my car into PARK. I was rolling at about I'd say 15-20 mph IF THAT... possibly slower!
However, I heard a grinding noise when I threw her in park. I just hope that since my wheels weren't really turning much at all... since I was on a sheet of ice sliding... that my tranny's okay.
How much of a threat did I give my transmission by throwing it into park. Again, I was driving pretty slow (if my wheels were even moving since I was on ice).
I would like to know what the signs of tranny failure or a bad torque converter or anything related to a broken tranny so I can look for these signs.
My tranny shifts and feels pretty much like it did before I threw it into park (but then there's that whole mental feeling that you screwed something up after doing something like that even if everything is fine).
I don't notice anything different basically... but I just don't want to have the tranny fail on me... so what are the signs of tranny failure?
I only threw it into park once though (I don't do this on a normal basis) so would this be just okay for this one time in an emergency?
... and yes... my car did NOT get into that accident
