Transmission not shifting

I have a A4 tranny and I went to the store the other day and when I came out I went to put it in reverse and....nothing. Not even a jerk, its like it was in nuetral. So I push my ride out of the parking spot...yea I looked real cool. [img]graemlins/banana.gif[/img]

I get in and pull out on the street and it doesnt shift from 1st. So I let the gas go and it shifts. Not to second but I think to third. I think I read somewhere that there could be 3 possible problems.

1. The tranny is shot...I hope its not.
2. The rear end is messed up and not letting it shift.( I think I read that somewhere on this forum)
3. The shift cable isnt working right and not shifting it properly

Any solutions...anything? I dont know what to do and I got a quote on rebuilding my current trans and it was $1500

did you figure out whats wrong yet? i mean, it would suck some balls if you replaced the tranny and it turned out that ur rear end was shot

Hmm, could be 2-4 band... How was your tranny shifting prior to this? Any delays in shifts, slippage at all?

I'm not real knowledgeable on Autos, but here is my take.

1. I'm sure its not your rear end. The input and output shafts are seperated by the internals of the transmission. Thats what is responsible for taking the power from the engine and putting it to the drivehaft. All the Rear end does it get turned by the transmission.

2. The only way the shift cable could be doing this is if it is for some reason only letting you put it in 1. In which case you couldn't get out of 1st. But you said it shifted sometimes.

I'm gonna say your transmission is internaly screwed up. Sounds like its time for a rebuild or replacement. :(

holy crap, mine did the same exact thing yesterday! thats weird, mines at the shop right now, have u heard anything back on urs? that way maybe i can let them know whats up with mine? or so i dont get screwed, thanks

You have a store that just sells stuff for Camaros and Firebirds?

That would rule. I would live there.

But for your problem I say just take it to a shop and have them look at it.

should i rebuild or get a new tranny? i can get one wiht 60k on it for 100 bucks, which way should i go

Up to you, you get what you pay for. I'd go with a performance rebuild.

I havnt taken it to a shop yet I plan on to during the week. The clutch packs...can they just replace those? or is it a entire rebuild?

They can replace those, but that is the main goal of a rebuild. There are some other little things that they do during a rebuild, but clutch packs are part of it.

If you are short on cash, just pick up one of the used trannys that that store has. Do they guarantee those trannys to be in good working order (do they give a 30 day warranty or something)?
