Folks -- thanks to everyone who responded to my $20 for my tach wire. Turns out I snagged the darn thing from behind the gauge cluster ... I had looked there before, but was baffled by the amount of white wires available (on my 1997 3.8L Camaro M5). I chose a wire that was lower than the other white ones, and slightly murkier white in color ... dunno if this helps. And the space there is VERY limited -- so I cut the sides of the wire tap thingy (yeah all technical) off, making a very short wire tap device. I made a ground wire by crimping a loop (you know, a metallic wiring thingy) onto the black wire and screwing the lower left panel screw through it, making a good ground to the metallic bar that was there. I made the + connection to the radio fuse, wrapping a wire around one of the radio (lower right 15A) fuse's legs (snaking the wire / fuse from behind the panel). And I fed the tach wire next to the steering column, down behind the lower panel, and up behind the two left side vents.
Anyway ... so the light is mounted in the left a-pillar vent. Very good spot! (I moved the existing ducting down where it's not very effective, I hope this doesn't hamper any defrostign ...)
I cut the three bars of the existing vent thingy out, so I just have the circular piece left (snugs aroudn the lite perffectly).
To make the install easier, be sure to remove the a-pillar and left vent molding while you're snaking wires around ...
Anyway ... thanks for everyone's help ... I finally got around to it and it took an hour or two (maybe less? I dunno) ... very quick install. (quicker than the FSB yesterday when I broke an endlink).

PS -- it's blue. And sorry if this belongs in the lounge.
