  • A 6-speed manual for v6ers...

As I read the may 2005 issue of CAR CRAFT, I stumbled across a very intruiguing advertisement toward the beginning of the mag.

Rockland standard gear inc. makes a 6 speed for F-body's that were originally equipped with a T-5. The part # is T56-011. The add says that that the tranny will bolt to any GM small block V8. The picture of the tranny in the add shows some sort of adapter plate on the front of the trans. I don't know if it will work for our cars or not.

The only down side is that it has a mechanical speedometer linkage. I bet they could convert it to electronic for a small fee. It also costs $1944. I guess that is a downside too.

They also have some built TKO 5 speed trannies. The price isn't listed, but I bet it is a lot less than $2000....

Sounds like a nice upgrade for 3rd gen V8s.

I am sure that is what it is intended for, but I bet it will fit into our cars no problem. If someone has a length/dia measurement, and a spline count, I will call and ask if it will fit into our cars.

You could make it work, but you would need a bellhousing adapter and you need to check if the input shaft is the right spline/length.

I said that it already has an adapter plate for different bellhousings. I am certain that our bolt pattern is integrated.

If someone has thier transmission out, they can check the dimensions of the input shaft. I don't want to pull mine out just to check. I would really like to know, though.

              Where is the adapterplate?

between the belhousing and motor? or between the bellhousing and tranny.

If bellhousing and tranny, we shoudl be able to use it on our cars, assuming input shaft length is all good.

The adapter is between the bellhousing and the transmission case. We would have to use our existing bellhousing.

I have no idea if the input shafts would work.

The picture they show on the website is without a bellhousing, just the adaptor plate.

Thats what I was thinking, there is a chance it will bolt on if the adapter plate is between the tranny and bellhousing. Then there is the length of shaft, splines, clutch thickness, ext that needs to be addressed. Its possible and would be nice if it could be done easily.

Also remeber, some 3800 4L60s have a 1 piece tranny. I know my 96 does. Im not sure what year it switched to the removable bellhousing.

I believe that T-56 is made by Borg-Warner (which is owned by Tremec now)
