I've been meaning to do a writeup on this so here goes
First. make sure your car is in neutral, remove shift knob, center console, rubber boot, then the shift mecanizum(4 bolts)
next clamp your shifter in a vice(by the thick part on the stick, leaving the the thin part cuttable, then choose how much you want to shorten it by(I took between 2 1/4 & 2 1/2) now use your cutting tool of choice
leave the freshly cut shifter in the vice, now you need a 3/8 pipe die ,if you don't have one don't fret, you can rent one from a truevalue (I did) or other hardware stores
tap the new end of the shifter(at leat as much as the orignal threading)and keep the die lubed(wd 40 works)
now you can reinstall your shifter (clean the mounting surface and apply a thin bead of rtv,and it wouldn't hurt to lube the ball and socket part with some atf)

here is some pics of mine

shorter shifts than stock, and much better knob location but shifts arn't as short as a aftermarket shifter, but not by much

I shortened mine also but I was stupid and just took a hack saw to it while it was still in the car. It worked

What did you use to keep the shift boot in place?
Also how is the knob on. Glued or what?
