  • Tranny Worrying Me.

It all started today. Drove PEREFECT up until about 4 hours ago...was cruising around went to get on the freeway took it to WOT and it went all the way up to 4500-5000 rpm and it sounded like it was winding out pretty good. It usually shifts at 5500-6000 when i floor it. I dont really know how to explain what it did. 4500-5000 rpms hit and it sounded like i was redlining and it felt like it was losing power. It would do that unless i let off the gas THEN it would shift into second. If i dont take the car to WOT it shifts PERFECTLY. So i got scared did a filter change and fluid change and it DIDNT help at all. At this point i CANNOT afford a rebuild and i CANNOT afford to replace the tranny. I read a couple other topics and didnt find what i was looking for other than the word "REBUILD" so if anyone has any comments PLEASE PLEASE reply. Thanks.

BTW. it does that in ANY gear. It does it from the 1-2 shift the 2-3 shift and so on. BUT ONLY at WOT. If i dont have my foot buried in the accelerator it wont do it.

Hitting the rev limiter at 5K? Was it bouncing off 5K like it would at 6K if didn't shift?

well i didnt explain it very well. to tell you what its doing exactly...its not shifting at WOT. if i dont have it at WOT it shifts when its supposed to every single time. the second i take it to WOT it quits shifting. could the VSS have any thing to do with that?

I read that...kinda scared me. How do you reset the PCM i disconnected the battery for like 2 hours and it didnt reset. Is there another way? IM willing to try the reset but being that i work at a pontiac dealer i might just have them look at it tomorrow while im at work. IM HOPING i dont need a rebuild...

ya know now that i think about voltage spikes.....i DID break one of my neon tubes sat night...they WERE NOT on at the time though. I tried to turn them on a couple times before i realized that the tube itself was broken...could that have given a voltage spike or drop even though they werent on?

WEll i had one of the guys i work with take a look at it and he thought it was related to my catalytic converter being bad. We changed the cat and now the problem got BETTER but its still there. NOW it shifts kinda late and it sorta hesitates or bucks sometimes when cruising. Ive been told it could be due to a misfire so im gonna replace my plug wires and see what happens.

I got some multiple misfires today at WOT. I didn't notice any lack of power though. SES light was blinking. Recently I also got the catalytic inefficiency code. Shifts are still fine.

                To reset the PCM:

                1. Put the ignition in the ON position.

                2. Take out the battery fuse by the door.

                3. Wait 30sec, turn the ignition OFF.

                4. Put the fuse back and start the car.

Reset the PCM. Take out the VSS sensor and inspect it visually. It's on the tail shaft of the tranny. Then drive around normally, no WOT, for 10-15min. Let the car cool off and do it again. Somehow this fixed the hitting the rev limiter problems I had.

also check tp sensor. unless you saw chunks of friction material in the pan when you serviced the trans, you probabaly don't need rebuild.
possibly something going on with shift solenoids but you can get to them from the valve body.

only happening at WOT though, i'd check tps operation and circuit to/from pcm. tech2 tool would be great to diag this problem....
