  • Gear Swap Pricing

I went to a local tranny shop today and was asking about getting a rea end gear swap. I told them I would bring the gears and they could put them in. The guy said it would cost me about $1,500, is that true I was thinking 3-4 hrs labor at about $70 a hour. I know it would be cheaper if I did it but I don't have another car or the tools. I was also looking online and which installation kit would I need to get
Basic Kit: Includes pinion shims, crush sleeve, pinion seal & cover gasket
Complete Kit: Includes pinion shims, carrier shims, crush sleeve, pinion seal, pinion nut, ring gear bolts, cover gasket, and pinion & carrier bearings
Deluxe Kit: Includes pinion shims, carrier shims, crush sleeve, pinion seal, pinion nut, ring gear bolts, cover gasket, pinion & carrier bearings, PLUS wheel bearings and seals. (All of the small parts and pieces necessary to RESTORE an axle to like new condition!)

Walk into that shop and kick that guy right in the nads. Shouldn't cost much more than a couple hundred bucks for them to install it.

i got mine done for $200
and btw, while you have your dif apart it would be crazy not to change out ALL the seals and bearings b/c since you have a 3.4, u prolly got some miles on her like i do. so buy the install kit with all the new bearings and seals....u dont really need a new gasket just put a bunch of silicone sealer on the cover and tiughten her down

mine was 250, look on ebay or something and get your self some 3.73 gears and a posi unit so tha tyou don't have the open dif. the gears will be much more useful then and it's right there to change also. and i know that they make an install kit cause i'm sure that i got one. but sorry for the life of me i can't remember where i found it. i also agree with kicking that guy in the nadas as well.
