97 z28 rear end with 80k miles on it, no leaks, limited rust, 342s and posi, and ticket times to show babying of the rear end (2.3 60 ft times). Looks in good shape with brake hook ups, even though I just want the gear.. the cost is 180 plus shipipng, does that sound good?

There's just too much left to speculation with used rear ends. If all you want is the gear, I'd just buy the gear brand new.
Personally for me to ever consider another used rear differential, I would have to go inspect it in person before purchasing. For Posi, I'd inspect the clutches for wear/disintegration. I'd check the fluid for signs of metal and inspect all gears for chipped or broken teeth. I would also check to see that the axle shafts were not bent, and if they were make sure that my old axle shafts would fit. I would also inspect the carrier/axle tube seams for leaks.
These are all potential problems you can run into with used differentials. Maybe others have had other problems, but these are firsthand problems that I have seen when dealing with them, and are things to look out for.

I agree would have to pop the cover and get in there with an inspection mirror and visualy check the internals before buying used.
If the only reason for swapping is to get the gearing and limited slip you have to make sure you are getting a perfectly good rearend or else you will end up spending more than keeeping what you have and just swaping in the parts you need.
Now if you are looking to get discs to replace drums or are wanting a beefier rearend like upgrading to a 12 bolt then swapping rearends becomes swap away.
