What are top speed in the automatic without the speed limiter on?

• #2
108 in a 3.4L....118 in a 3.8L, although this is highly debated.

Hi

In France, no governors on our Camaros
That's why GM gives top speed in the Camaro's paper ad (for 1999 cars):
V6 3.8l : 201km/h=125.62mph (3.23 lsd)
Z28 5.7l : 254km/h=157.75mph (3.42 lsd)

Top speed is the same with auto or manual.
Only gas mileage is different.

Hope that helps.

I've been 125mph in my sisters Monte Carlo SS and I hit the governor so I think the speed is higher than that on them.

Someone did this earlier and said the top speed of a 3.8 5-speed with 3.23 gears was 149mph. That would be slightly higher with 3.08s, and slightly lower with 3.42s.

Actually no it wouldn't. It takes more power to turn 3.08s and less for 3.42s they will still equal out to about the same. It was also 145mph on a dyno so it will be less in real driving.

The top speed in a 3.4L isn't 108. I've hit 118 in mine with the speed limiter. I was clocked by a police friend of mine on a closed highway.

yeah i think it would. final drive differential and the mechanism of gear reduction is a very interesting principle: you can increase torque or you can increase speed. you can't do both. inverse relationship. 3.08 offers less gear reduction (torque multiplication through "gear leverage") than the 3.23 or 3.42. but it gives you more available speed. you'd be going faster at x rpm's with 3.08 than you would with 3.42, but it would take you slightly longer to get up to that speed.

theoretically, the 3800 can top 200mph. your final drive would have to be absurd and you'd probably run like somewhere in the mid 20's in the 1/4.

the speed is limited on these cars because they come with t-rated tires from the factory. period. gm does not want its drivers going out and shredding tires by exceeding the speed rating. if i'm not mistaken, the grand am gt and the monte carlo ss come with h rated tires. that's why they go faster than we do before they hit the limiter.

it would be interesting to see exactly how fast we could go before drag would begin to limit our speed....
