"Gears" are almost always the term referring to the ring and pinion gears in your rear end (i.e. the rear axle -- the driveshaft goes into the middle of this, and then the "motion" goes through the gears, into the axles, and out the wheels). Stock our cars come with 3.08, 3.23, and 3.42 ratios typically -- a 3.73 or 4.10 ratio will afford a more agressive launch, and will let you "use" more of the powerband during a track pass.

If you're looking at a gear swap 3.42s seem to be the best all around gear for V6 f-bodies: if you're looking to go more aggressive I would go no higher than 3.73s.-Eric
2002 Navy Blue Camaro...Striped and Stalled. 35th Anniversary SS wheels
Best ET: 15.384 @ 88.32 on street tires
Project Whitney: Goal, 14.0 1/4 by summer 2008.
