i think that my tranny fluid is low... what is the proper way to check the tranny fluid.. with the car running or with the car off

i've had a really small leak for some time now and i always checked it with the motor off... i read on a previous post that u do it with the engine running. ... i checked it after driving for a while and nothing registered on the dipstick.. i noticed a very slight slippage at WOT... no slippage during normal driving... do i add the fluid where the dipstick is? also what kind of fluid should i buy?Comment
