  • V6 gears in v8 rear end

i have 3.42's in my v6 and i might buy a rear end with posi and disk brakes from a Z. can i just put the gears or even the axles in the V8 rear end and hook it right up to my car? i know i need a V8 e-brake cable too. but will the gears work? the V8 had 3.23's in it but he said there fried.

From what I've read on the aftermarket pages in Jegs & Summit, it depends on the carrier. I'm no tsaying either way, just browse through those catalogs & get a feel for it.

Yes...you can use your 3.42s in the new rear. All 4th gens are the same as far as the differentials fitting.

If the rear came out of a 6spd, it might have 3.42s in it already.

I thought the 6 spds had 2.73s....but he said it had 3.23s...so I doesn't matter.

yea i thought there was something with the 2 series carrier and 3 series but i have hear different stories about em about 3.08's being 2 or 3 and 3.23's being both. maybe ill e-mail one of the catalogues(spelling :-D)

2 or 3 series doesn't matter...it only matters with the matchup of the differential and gears...not the rear end. GM 7.5/7.625" rear ends are common and most differntials and gears can be swapped back and forth.

Nopoe they came with 3.42s also, at least thats what the gears form the 97 6-speed firehawk rear axle in the back of my 3.4L are from.

speedy V6 camaro, so u say that if i buy this rear end just for the limited slip and disk brakes i can make them fit each other as long as there both 7.5 inch or 7.625?

You can swap gears and diffs into any 4th gen fbody...the 3.08 and 2.73s are 2 series and 3.23 and 3.42s are 3 series....which has to do with the gear height and differential....so as long as you have 3.42s that are 3 series you can shove them into the Z rear. The only prob would be if you bought 3.42s to fit on a differential that comes with the 3.08s, cause those would be 2 series and wouldn't fit.
