  • Found whats wrong when your shifter jumps up

I know everytime everyone asks this questions they always get the same response... you broke a tranny mount, WRONG! If it makes no noise only moves there is most likely another problem. I checked my tranny mounts myself they are perfect, however I did find where the problem is. The rear extension, more specifically, the housing. If you don't know what this is its the brace that is on the driver's side of your driveshaft. It has a bushing that connects this to the rear of your transmission. Slide under the car and looked at mine, it basically looks like someone hit it with a sledge. Now that I know what the problem is, I have another problem. No one sells just the bushing that I need and only GM sells anything that will help. They will generously sell me the whole rear extension housing for only $400. Anyone know where I can get this cheaper or just the bushing? or should I start checking junk yards and part cars.

Are you guys talking about the two halves of the bracket that the torque arm (and bushing) sit in? With the rubber bushing held to the bracket with a couple rivets?

If so, gmpartsdirect.com is your friend.
the two halves of the bracket are:
    GM PART # 10252374
    GM PART # 10252375

    $30 total for both halves.

If I'm right on this, someone want to check the parts manual to make sure I got the right ones?

If you need something else or more than the two clamshell metal brackets with the bushings in them, let me know. A pic might help if I've got the wrong part.

ur talkin about the torque arm bushing and i highly recommend a poly bushing, i think they are around $30...but if its the torque arm bushing thats broke i dont know how the shifter would move up and down because the tranny mount is what keeps the tailhousing from moving up and down, the torque arm bushing is for the torque arm which is for the suspension...the tranny mount may look perfect but i bet if u pull it out u may find it to be broken, ive had buddies that broke the metal piece inside the rubber on the mount yet it still looked perfect on the outside...also how could u run those Torque arms that bolt to the crossmember holes if it causes the tranny to move up when u punch it????

That long *** thing is the torque arm? Wonder why none of my mechanic friends knew what the hell to call it. Either way the guys that own the shop next to me checked it all out they are transmission specialists. They said the only thing they have found what the mutilated bushing that was at the back of the transmission.

Did you try lifting the tranny to see if it would move up. If the mount is broken and the tranny is resting on it you may not be able to notice it.

DOes it look kinda like this?

              http://www.installuniversity.com/pub...en/torque3.jpg

              http://www.installuniversity.com/pub...en/torque6.jpg

The red thing in the 2nd pic is a torque arm bushing.

The torque arm is the long metal piece form the tail of the tranny to the rear end(its wierd I run into alot of car people(non-f-body) and they have no idea what a torque arm is)

Did you jsut lose the torque amr bushing or the things on both sides of the transmission?

I recently snapped all the bolts on that lost the tranny counterweight and bracket for the exhasut. And I nearly lost the torque arm bushing and bracket. My torque arm would smack against the tranny tunnel, when I accelerated, and when I braked it would smack that little crossmeber piece behind the tranny.

BUt it never made my shifter physically moved, only a broken tranny mount did that. Sounds like you have a stick, put it in first, accelerate, then ride the gear down then floor it, if it moves more then like a 1/2 in. its probably broken. To warn you Mine wasn't completely broken jsut torn on one side, I only figured out it was broken when I took it out and can pull it to a 90* angle with just my hands.

AS fo the parts, DO NOT SPEND $400! Either check the junkyard, or... I actually may be getting a wrecked 94 3.4L in a few days, its an auto, but I will check to see if its the same piece as t5s.

Yea thats it figures the dealership would call a torque arm , a rear extension. That thats what it looked like but I'm used to rx-7's which have the torque arm in the engine bay. I just need the bushing for the torque arm then, anyone got a link to buy a poly bushing? On and yes all three of us tried to see if the mount would move using a strewdriver as leverage. But tomorrow or so I'll take the mount completely off and see if I can find a break in it. My shifter moves about 1-2 inches under hard accel or engine braking. Thanks guys

Cool if its just the bushing, I got mine for I think $14.95, which was really like $5, since I had ordered over $200 I got $10 off my order the bushing put me over the limit.
