• Auto-stick concept

Late night brain fart, and its still early in the morning and I havent had my coffee yet, so bear with me.

Since the 4L60E tranny recieves electronic signals from the PCM to shift while in drive, would it be possible to splice into the wiring, or actually re-route the wiring (delete from pcm, move to steering column) so that you can manually control the signal going to transmission.... kindof a jerry-rigged auto-stick except you wouldnt have the option of letting the computer take over. I was thinking like two thumb buttons on the steering wheel like the formula 1 cars have?

My Dodge Intrepid has the autostick feature. It's super cool, even though the car is an automatic. It's like having a manual, without the clutch or the stalling.

The only difference on the Dodge ones is that, unlike the 04 Grand Prix's, it's on the floorshift, not the steering wheel, it's easier that way, trust me.

      Steering wheel paddle shifters suck...

I thougth they woudl be cool, but I tore into a saab 9-3 with autostick at autoshow in motion, try shifting gears with wheel cranked, its impossible, you have to take your hand off the wheel and change it.

well, with location aside, anyone think it would be possible to rig something up to manually control the signal to the tranny tellin it when to up/down shift?

I love the paddle shifting on the '04 Grand Prixs!! Granted it's not exactly the same as a true manual but it is lots of fun and adds a new element to a "boring/slow" automatic. Doesn't leave a lot of room for aftermarket performance mods though for your tranny since it's all electronically driven and complicated... I'd hate to see the rebuild costs on one of those!

What about the some of the Lambo's? They have a steering wheel shifter but its not like the Grand Prix's. Its behind the steering wheel and you just pull back. Only complaint they had about it on t.v. was that it was a b*tch to launch.

I think the best person to ask is Magnus. With all his work on the PCM he might be able to tell you what type of signal to send and things like that.

Not true. Just because you can control (or think you can control) the shifting doesn't mean the tranny (or car) will do what you want it to do. Fine tuning the computer controlling the trans yields gains for my brother when he works on the GTPs. I won't mention names since some people may have problems with 'free advertising'. But regardless, GM doesn't program these cars for performance so there is always room for improvement.

the 4l60e isnt fully shifted via electronics. the computer can control the shift points somewhat i think but other than that it still up to the valve body.

you could install a transgo kit to let you select any gear. then put a stepper on the gear selector cable. control the stepper with paddles. of course, you loose fully automatic operation this way as well.

The clutch and the stalling? **** man, the clutch is the best part, and I don't stall.

the 4L60E isnt fully electric, like chas said. you can get a kit that gets rid of the electric signals and basically makes it a 700R4.
