The carrier is the differential. Your posi is the differential, and therefore is the carrier.

explain this to me, when u change from open diff. to lsd... ur changing the carrier then? doesnt this cause a possible problem with the gears, as u've changed the carrier, would u not need the gears 're-pressed' with those fancy specialist tools?

A Limited Slip Differential is a completely new differential from the open diffy you've got in there. The gear just bolts directly onto the side of the differential. Only special tool needed is a torque wrench to tighten the bolts correctly.
If you were only upgrading to a LSD (what I did), then you would take the old one out, unbolt the gear, bolt it onto the new one, and install the LSD.

Here's a typical rear end. It's not exactly like ours, but close enough.

If you're installing new gears, I would take it to a shop to have it done correctly. Tolerances are very tight when it comes to new gears.

Assuming they're in good shape, it would work fine.

ok I thought I had this figured out but some of these posts confused me. If I were to go from a 3.08 open diff to an LSD, I thought I needed to get new gears too? Can I really just get the LSD and use my 3.08's?

The stock 3.08s will not work with the take-off LSD.

That's what I thought. But I think I might have either misinterpreted this post or am missing something when I read it.

From what I bolded in that quote, to me it sounds like he only changed the LSD and kept the old gears? That is what confused me. I thought you needed new gears with the LSD. Am I missing something?

Is it because he has the M5 so he had 3.23's, which I think 3.23's have a 3-series carrier and the LSD has a 3-series and the 3.08's are 2-series. Is this why it wouldn't work with the 3.08's or am I still missing sometihng here?
