  • 3.42 Gears Installation !!!!

My friend is finally going to install the LSD and Gears next week. He is a mechanic and has lots of experience working with engines and transmissions but never changed gears (since that is more like a performance change). Anyways, I've heard a lot of people saying in this forum that we should have the gears installed by a professional because of something I can't remember. What is it exactly he should keep an eye on when installing the new gears? Why is the reason everybody says that a professional should install the gears? Is he going to need any special tools for it? I think I saw somebody in here saying something about measuremts?
    Any info will be appreciated,
    Thanks.

p.s. Don't mention the 'search' thing since I already did that. Need more specific info now.

Setting the backlash is VERY important. If the gears don't line right you could literally rip the whole rear apart. From what I hear its very tedious and takes a pro eye and accuracy.

You will need a depth setting tool, several different torque wrenches, bearing pullers, and drivers, shimms, dial indicator, and experienced eyes to get a good pattern. I hear some say they can swap the gears and differential in two hours or less. If done right, it takes a lot longer. If done wrong, it will probably fail. Having a pro do it is money well spent and there is no shame for jobbing out such specialty work.

Ok, my friend wants to know what is the backlash setting. He got the tools needed to do the measurement but now he wants to now what is the backlash setting. What the number is in inches I guess (which i am sure will be like thousandths of an inch).
        Thanks for the help
