  • Clicking from rear-end, also U-joint question...

Lately I've noticed a noise coming from the rear end on my car. It is a rythmic clicking noise that changes with the speed of the car, but I can only hear it when:
    A. I am going VERY slow, like under 10 mph; and B. The car is not in gear, either clutch pushed in or in neutral, like coming to a stop.

It doesnt matter if the brakes are applied or not. If the car is in gear and I'm slowing down, I dont hear it. I've also noticed more often that I hear an audible (slightly louder) clunk whenever I am shifting and let the clutch back out, i.e. when torque goes back to the wheels. This also sounds like it is coming from the rear end. This is my first RWD car, and I understand that it might make a few noises that I'm not used to, but I dont think this sounds right. Is this a U-joint problem? The car is a 2000 with 21k miles on it. I am planning on getting a 1LE driveshaft in a few weeks, should I get new U-joints as well? Are the U-joints the same for the steel and aluminum driveshafts? Thanks a lot for the help.

Yes, the u-joints are the same for steel and aluminum. Can't really tell what the problem is without hearing it myself, so I'd strongly recommend replacing the u-joints as your first step.
