It may have been discussed thousands of times but there is no sticky for it. Many of the posts are also open ended and full of conjecture.

I was going to post this next info in it's own thread but then I saw this one....

there is more than one transgo shift kit for the 4l60E 1993 and up cars. Now try and figure out what parts come with what kits. Good luck. One kit costs 40 bucks and the other costs 110 bucks. The more expensive kit seems to come with a tranny pan gasket. other than that...who knows?

I forget which part it is...but much of the kit istall is easy. there is a part of the kit that is very difficult to install and it can easily be messed up.

talk to a tranny shop. many of them will not hesitate to put in a trango stage 1 or 2 in a 727 torqueflite but mention that you have a 4l60e and they start shaking their heads. BUT...here is the kicker. Some shops will use SOME of the trangso kit for a 4l60e but they will not drill out or plug/modify (reprogram) the plate as suggested in the transgo kit.
The idea behind using some of the kit (as regards the 4l60e is to improve (shorten) shift times during upshifts which reduces heat build up in the tranny and thereby helps to insure a longer service life for the tranny. Many tranny shops just don't like increasing the fluid pressures on an otherwise stock 4L40e.

From my research tranny shops to seem to agree that reducing the upshift times does promote longer service life in the tranny as opposed to long slow up shifts which are inherently bad for the tranny but seem to be what the average car buyer wants...a seemless and smooth, nearly un noticeable shift.

To get a tranny to shift hard and fast at wide open throttle and 'survive' for any worthwile amount of time seems to require a 'pro built' style of tranny. As much as i would like to drive a race car to work everyday i just don't think i want to drop 2 grand or more for a semi pro tranny. regular track runners will feel differently.

I do plan on trying to figure out the difference (other than the pan gasket) between the two main transgo kits. the SK4l60e-2 sells for about $40 and the TG 4l60e sells for about $100. sometimes the transgo kits are marketed as coming with a tutorial video as well but some members here still cant finish the install after 3 days. I plan on skipping that 'real hard step' of the kit and i also plan on skipping the 'repromming' of the plate in a few months when my car hits 25,000 miles and i drain and replace the tranny fluid.

Anyone interested in the transgo kit(s) for their 4L60e can easily call their local tranny shops and get some opinions. If they right away say it is a bad idea maybe ask them about what i just metioned...how do they feel about using some of the kit to improve upshifts but not reprogram the plate.

disclaimer: I am not bashing anyone or slighting anyone with this post. We all know that doing a search here or in other forums yields months of reading that is back and forth. The main concept of quicker shifts = less friction is supported by transmission professionals. At least we have that to go on. The concept of increasing, reprogramming tranny fluid pressure IS a risky busines when you understand some basics about fluid dynamics and pumps and seals and most of all...cheap plastic parts.

If i were you i would get it done by a tranny shop unless you have a lift in your garage to lift your car over head it would take a very long time. putting the berings and springs in takes a long time
