Well once of my friends has a 02 Gt stang and he always powershifts in his auto, so I thought I would start too. How long should you leave it in 1st, 2nd and etc..and I noticed that when I have it in 1st going about 20mph,if I shift into 2nd and floor it, it really pulls hard. But I wanna know anything about doing this,ex.-harful effects to the tranny etc..Thanks for all help in advance.

Shifting in an auto...

The transmission is electronically controlled. It doesn't matter whether you hold it in 1st or 2nd or just leave it in 3rd or OD, because it will shift at whatever RPM's it's programmed to no matter when you shift to higher gear. For example, you shift from 2nd to 3rd... it may not shift immediatly into 3rd until a preprogrammed RPM.
Have you ever tried leaving it in 1st and go WOT? Surprised how it shifts into 2nd!? :D
Powershifting a 4L60E = not possible = waste of time and energy that's better focused on where you're going! ;)

if you shift yourself i think it's more of a mind thing because our cars shift anyway, but gm high tech performance said it was bad for the tranny cause it didn't build the pressure it needed and eventualy will wear a tranny out quicker. ;)Xnenon headlight conversion
k&n cold air induction
85 shot of nitrous (NOS)
255 lph walbro fuel pump
80 series flowmaster
z rated 255/50\'s
misc. auto meter tach and a-pillar

it's pointless EXCEPT...
when approaching 118 at around 111 the car will shift from 3rd gear to 4th when in overdrive. 111 is not redline in 3rd gear with 3.42s or 3.08s. For 3.42s it hits redline at exactly 118mph in 3rd. Your best bet is when going for the top speed run is to keep it in 3 (which is D) and it will not shift at that point. All the other shifts are done perfectly by the computer. Oh trust me this works because I pull on other 3.8s real easy from 110-118 because of me being at like 5,200rpms (max hp) and the others are shifting into 4th only pulling at like 3,800rpms.

Yea, if you watch at the track...the faster cars with autos won't shift it themselves, just out it in D and step on it... Alot of the ones who do try it themselves end up running slower than they could have, that computer is alot better at shifting than you or I ever will be!www.fullthrottlev6.com THE SOURCE!

Last time I did that, I thought mine would have shifted out of second like it does first, but it didnt, instead it made this godawful, duh duhd noise, and the car was shaking, until I actually threw into D. What happened?1997 30th Anniversary A4 w/ some mods

I don't recommend shifting it yourself, you can hurt the tranny by doing that.2003 Nissan 350Z Touring Coupe, Daytona Blue, Frost leather interior, navigation, 18 inch wheels, M6, fully loaded, intake, crank pulley.

Previous cars:
1991 Mustang (347)
2002 RS Camaro
1985 IROC-Z (305)
1994 Camaro convertible V6

That would be right except for the fact that redline or 6000 rpm occurs at 132mph in 3rd gear with 3.42's.Matt
2000 Firebird

FullThrottleV6.com

There is nothing you can do to keep the tranny from doing the 1-2 shift
If you are drag racing, I recommend leaving it in 3rd (or D for those of you with camaros) just because it will help you slow down when the race is over. (IT WILL NOT MAKE YOU ANY FASTER).
If you are autocrossing, you should leave it in second. 3rd gear doesn't start until 70'ish mph and you will not be reaching those speeds. Plus, when you let off the gas to slow down the tranny will sometimes go into 3rd (trust me, I have seen noticable improvements in autox times leaving it in second)
Manually shifting your car is not only pointless but also bad for the transmission.

no it's 118. Why don't you go out and try it. First goes to approx 40mph, then 2nd winds out around 75mph and 3rd now goes to 132 ROLFMAO...think about the speed difference. Third gear will take you to 118 but the PCM will shift at 111/112 around 5,000rpms.
