i'm assuming that you have to have the y87 package to have the lsd stock right? how do you tell? i know that this is kind of a stupid question, but i don't know. i have a 2000 bird that has basically no options. so i'm assuming that i don't have one. if i get a lsd (the $100 from slp) should i do gears at the same time? if i get gears i was thinking 3.42 does that change gas mileage a lot? thanks.

On your sticker, inside the door, it will have G80 code for LSD, if you have it. LSD and 3.42's would be a nice upgrade...gas mileage won't suffer drastically...good choice

Spray some water on the ground roll the back wheels on the water, hold the brake and give it some gas, if you get both wheels to turn at the same time you've got LSD

can you put in a lsd without changing the gears? just curious, i know that it will save me time and money (if i have it done) if i do them both at once.2000 pewter firebird<br />Short Throw Shifter, Whisper Lid, Whisper Ram Air, Holley Filter, B&B Triflo, LSD, BMR LCA, STB, PHR, and sway bars (32/21).<br />Power window conversion

Yes you can. But, a LSD install, and a later gear install will end up costing much more than having them done at the same time. Plus you are subjecting a new LSD to a set of gears that are wearing themselves down. Everything starts out new.
If you can afford it, get both done at the same time.

I believe the LSD was available without the Y87 package, but the G80 code will tell you for sure(assuming it's all original, that's the door, and the rear). The rear axle ratio code is on there as well.
Definetly do the gear change at the same time. This is a great combo(too bad GM screwed us 5-speed guys by deleting the 3.42 from the Y87 pkg). The LSD install, and the gear change are very similar jobs, so to do them at different times is like doing the same job twice.
Oh yeah, don't forget, if you do the gear change, you need to reprogram, so include a couple of hundred for a HyperTech programer too. But you need one of those anyway, right?2002 CAMARO \"RS\"<br /> 3800/M5/Y87

I paid $125 to have GM install mine. It was worth the lifetime guarantee and I watched them do it too.2002 5-spd NBM Camaro
