  • my thoughts on SLP

I'm getting ready to swap out my open rear for an Eaton posi. Since I depend on this car to get me back and forth to work I am making sure I cover all of my bases.

I read that I will have to press off my ABS ring on the open diff. and transfer it to the Eaton unit. However, just in case the ring breaks I'd like to have one on hand to press on to the new unit. So, I went over to SLP's website to order one.

Cost of the reluctor ring- 24.95. With shipping and other added costs my total bill comes out to 41 bucks and some change. However, they refused my order. Why?

"Due to the current cost of order processing, SLP has instituted a $25.00 minimum order requirement."

For 5 cents they refuse to sell me just one part off their website requiring me to purchase something else.

    My thoughts? Ridiculous. Goodbye SLP.

I seriously doubt you would damage the ring. I hit mine with a hammer to knock it off the old differential and it was fine.

How about a nifty letter opener

You are correct, I would probably be fine but I am one of those people who likes to prepare. Better to not need the ring than to have to try to find a last minute ride to work or drive without my ABS. That's worth the 15 bucks to me. But like I said you are probably right.

As for the letter opener thanks for the suggestion but I already have a dozen of those lying around already. For what the ring would cost me from SLP I could get it from the GM dealer for around 15. Since I have to wait for my posi unit to arrive I can wait if the dealer has to order the ring.

I also read in here that when ordering this ring from the GM dealer you have to have them look the gears up as a V8. Is this true? It would seem to me that they should have this part listed under the V6 as well since the ABS ring was put on the V6 cars from the factory. Thanks for the help!

There's a guy here that's selling an abs ring in Temple, TX if he still has it. Search the "for sale" section - it's a few weeks old now.

or you could buy the GM limited slip additive that you'll need to use... There, you're past $25 now.

That was the only problem with the install was that I had everything else- carrier bearings/races, cover gasket, limited slip additive.

I found another means of obtaining the ring- afterthoughts auto sells them and while they are still the SLP rings, I can still purchase just the ring separately.

I just cant wait until that and my Spohn LCA's come in. Stiffen up the rear end a bit and hopefully cure the wheel hop I've been getting at times.
