Lower gears will really wake the car up, depending on what you have now and how radical you go.
3.73s are a common upgrade that yields good performance, and 4.10s will result in some quick times.
Some guys with 3.08s upgrade to the stock 3.42, but I'd personally go at least 3.73.
It won't do any damage to your car, but you will rev higher while cruising on the highway. Gas mileage usually isn't usually effected too bad.
If you have 3.08s now, you'll also need to get a new differential. It's always a good idea to upgrade to a limited slip differential regardless if you have a series 3 carrier already. That'll run about another $150.
Install costs usually range from $200-$300, depending on how good of a deal you get.
There's literally hundreds of posts on stuff like this, so be sure to search the Drivetrain section for more information. Just about every question imaginable has already been asked and answered.
Good luck. Matt

No, if you already have it you just put the new ring gear on it. No need for an upgraded one.Matt
