  • Driveshaft Bearing....

Okay my driveshaft bearing and rear driveshaft seal in my trans are shot to hell. Its so bad I can hear my driveshaft slapping around when I give it any sort of low end kick... Has anyone replaced these parts? I was told it shouldn't be too hard, but being one who's extent of automatic tranny work is a new pan and gasket, I wanted a second opinion...

yes its very easy. The bearing in the driveshaft cant be replaced tho, it is one whole unit with the driveshaft. I just got a one piece for 40 bucks and it installed it in 15 min. Its only 4-6 screws u need to take off. I think u need a seal puller for the seal but i dont know cause i had someone else do that.

What I am actualy looking at is the bearing in the tail end of the transmission, not the carrier bearing.

Well found out what was going on, I need a new slip yolk and driveshaft seal. Cake walk for my trans guy, did it in less than 45minutes and only cost me about $200.

I woudl have suggested upgrading to a used lt1 driveshaft, and replace the seal yourself.

lt1 driveshaft is like $15-30 depending where you look, or upgrade to aluminum ls1 one, but they are like $80-150

The seal, I think I still have one laying around but I think its like $20 from the dealer, easy to put in, just a hammer and block of wood. Might have needed a slide hammer to get the old one out though, could be possible to pry out too.

Well I would have done the seal myself, but I don't play too much with automatics, and it needed an entire new slip yoke. So he just replaced the whole piece. I am going to be picking up a aluminum driveshaft, probably from SLP within a few weeks here anyways, along with a safty loop.

99% of the time you get a used driveshaft it comes with the slip yoke, its more work to detach and reattach it. I have purchased both a lt1 and ls1 aluminum driveshaft and both came with slip yokes.

as for the seal, its the same on autos and in manuals. Also the same as the pinion seal on the diff.

Its just a circular metal piece that bangs into the tail of the tranny, you pop it out, then tap the other one in.

Also what happend to the slipyoke? not sure I have ever heard of one going bad other then one being out of a car and getting a little corroded and nothing a 2 minutes with sandpaper could not fix? Did just the U-joint go out? if so shoudl have cost like $20 to get it replaced at a drivetrain shop.

Not sure honestly, I know the little brass bushing was shot, and the yoke itself was a little ripped up. Damn I hope the new shaft doesn't have one, that would be a bummer... Sounds like something I maybe should have done though, would have been fairly easy if its like that.
