ok guys, i just found out that my car has a 3.08 gear,,, what are all the parts that i need to buy, so that all i have to do is take it to someone to install,, i don't really understand the two or three carrier or the 7.5 8.5 or 10.5 bolt thing,,, just let me know what i need,,
You will need a new differential (I would get lsd too) if yours is like mine (96). I dont think you can just swap out gears for a 98-02 Fbody but i might be wrong. It will be a 10-bolt 7.5" that GM uses on S10s, camaros, firebirds, etc. so you can probably find a used one for pretty cheap. Or you can spend some extra $$$ and get an Auburn differntial. And it will be 3-series. Oh and you will need some gears too. hehe. Once you have all that just take it to someone who knows what theyre doing and you should be good to go.

You may also want to consider doing a Z28 rear-end swap. It will probably be hard to find one but if you do find one with the 3.42's it will make the install a lot easier (and cheaper) since the gears are already there. You might be able to find one with LSD and disc brakes as well.
i can guarantee you i answer this question at least once every 5 days. do a search, for real, i'm not going to repeat myself. not that i'm trying to be rude, but i guarantee you the more times it gets asked, the more times i answer, the more possible topics a search will bring up, the more less-restricted your key-word searches have to be. just search. you'll find everything you need to know...and if not, then search by my member # in the drivetrain section and see how many times i've said it in my posts.

Ease up on the guy he has a low post count and probably hasn't found the search button. Does saying this make you feel better or something?
And since does having a few more topics a subject a bad thing?
Youre right a 3.08 is a series 2 gear. The 3.42 is a series 3 gear. What makes everything series 2 or 3 is in the differential.
The rear is classified as a 7.5 inch 10 bolt rear(ten bolts around the cover if I am not mistaken). I can't remember if the rear is a actual 7.5 inch of what but thats what you have. If you buy off the internet make sure that is specifies 3 series 7.5 There are some that are series 2 3.42 gears but I don't believe that they can fit our cars.
Auburn is more of a racing differential and is the next step up from the Torsen that you can get for our cars. Depends on where you want to go but not a bad idea sometimes. If you can get a new rearend then by all means GO FOR IT!!

said i wasn't trying to be rude--that means i wasn't trying to be rude. nuff said. i was telling him to search, not telling him to **** off. i understand that he's a new member and probably doesn't know how to search--but that's why i told him to search by my member name.
i don't mind answering questions, but they do get quite a bit repetitive around here, so i'm just trying to make it a little easier on everyone.
sorry if i was rude guys, wasn't trying to be an *** :D
Still trying to find oil leak on my Camaro, it’s a tough one. I think it is the oil pressure sender myself. Leaking when raving and going into boost....
