3.73's and lsd installed but it's whinning!! HELP

Okay hears it is I got the gear and lsd installed yesterday and at a local shop and when I go down the road and when my foot is barley on the gas you can hear it whiinning. I took it back today and he took it back apart he says that it's in there as perfect as it can get. He said that it could just be the cover it's a TA or it could be the lsd. Do any of you guys have any suggestions or had this happen to them any help is appreciated

according to what ive read ( no experience cause i havnt done it yet ) but Wickedv6 says his wine a little, some gears wine more than others just because of the brand

its normal from what i read for 3.73's to whine but like i say no experience

What brand are the gears? If they are Richmond they are known to whine a lot. =)

I have strange gears I got them out of thunderracing they carry those and the motive but they said that the strange would be a better set up so I went with them. The whinning isn't that bad just I wasn't expecting to get that expecailly since a had it profesionally done do you guys think it will get quiter as it breaks in or just stay the same

I've heard that royal purple fluid will keep the whining down some. I dunno but that's what I read somewhere.

I've got gear whine with my Superior 3.42s and mine didn't start until about 6000 mles after installation by a pro

no, it won't get any better and your gears will wear more quickly. whining means either the gears were already a little worn before you put them in (which you got them new, so scratch that) or they weren't set up to the proper backlash, which is probably the case. i know the place said they set it up perfect, but everyone uses different guidelines when doing gears--some set it up between .008-.012 and some people make a smaller gap by doing .005-.008. but i can't really give you any advice, just don't expect the noise to ever get better and don't expect the gears to last too terribly long.

i have Richmond 3.73's and they do whine a little, but its not enough to matter, from people ive talked to, the only brand of gears that probably wont whine are the original GM gears, i was running just regular gear oil at first and the whine was kinda annoying if you didnt have the radio up a little so i put some full synthetic Mobil 1 gear oil in it and its quieted them down some, its nothing to worry about...ill definately deal w/the whine for the gains!! i love my 3.73's!!! what only4u said is true in most cases but the way you will know if they are set up wrong is if the whining gets louder and louder w/time, of course it will get a little worse when the rear end gets hot from driving a lot, but if it gets crazy loud then you got a problem, ive had my gears in for about 2000-3000 miles so far and the whine hasnt changed a bit, also i KNOW mine were set up perfect because i did them myself and saw for myself...

thanks alot guys for answering hears an update I took it back today and he reset them, I left and it was almost no whin at all just maybe a little but nothing that you would care about so I was happy with that but on the way home I noticed a buring smell I looked under the car and the damn thing was leaking so I took it back and it was one of the seals the one by the drive shaft we coulnd't figure out why it busted but the housing was terriblly hot so we thought that it might be that royal purple gear oil that we used. We drained that out and put some regular oil back there and a new seal and so far so good but I'm scared to get on it at all because I don't want any more problems. ya, that's the pinion seal more than likely. you aren't supposed to ever reset gears and use the same pinion seal and crush sleeve too. but it worked out for ya it looks like.

gears get really hot. don't worry about it, they will always get that hot. if these gears are brand new, i would not drive them HARD for about the first 500 miles. and actually, if you are going to make a trip more than 20 miles, pull your car over and give the gears a bit to cool down. new gears wear fast and little pieces of metal break off in them. not too worry because our diff housings have a magnet to collect all of the metal pieces, BUT if you drive really hard, the gears get worked more (more metal comes off) and the gears get hotter (hotter gears=softer gears=more metal wear). so you need to let them break in for about 500 miles. and YES, that means DO NOT FLOOR IT!!! you can if you want, but don't come running to me if ya got gear problems, cause i'll just say "i told ya so."

and btw, didn't i tell ya the howling would get fixed if the gears were set right?

If hes a pro he should know to always use a new crush collar and pinion seal. When i put my gears in they whined, i used another shim and the whine stopped, if gears whine they will not last that long, well as long

the guy that put my gears in builds 9 sec race cars. he told me that the whine is perfectly normal. true at first it was really loud, but no it has settled down a lot and i can barely hear'em.
