Is the rear end on a non-Y87 car already set up to take a limited slip differential? How hard is it to install it? Anything special that needs to be done?
The rear end on a Y87 and a non Y87 are the same, except for one has the limited slip "carrier" and the other doesn't. If you get a new or used LSD carrier, a rebuild kit, and the proper fluids and additive, you have all you need to bring it to a shop.
In short, if you get the correct LSD carrier, it's designed to bolt up in there with no modifications. You want a 3-series carrier to match with 3.23 rear gears and higher, and a 2-series carrier for 3.08 and lower.
Install requires many hours, a good bit of disassembly, bearing pullers, dial gauges, experience, and luck. Most people leave this to a professional mechanic. There are install guides here if you search a little. There are also stories of what happens when you screw up the install by doing it yourself...

Anyone here had a mechanic install it before and can tell me how much it cost? I know it will differ depending on a whole bunch of factors but i'de like a ballpark figure.
its cheaper to buy a rear end with the lsd and 3.42 gears and put it in yourself.
