i currently have an open rear end with 3.08 gears. My friend in his 99 Z28 is going to give me his zexel-torsen differential with 2.73 gears. My question is, is this what a LSD is? Also, since the differential has the 2 series carrier, could i just buy the series 2 3.42 gears and install them?

It should have LSD (I think thats when chevy made torsen differentials the standard for z28). And are you sure its not 3.73 or 3.23 gears? If its 3.73 then I would just stick with those. And is your friend replacing his differential or getting a whole new rear end cause it would be a lot easier just to swap out rear ends instead of having to take the differential apart.

I doubt that they are 3.73 or 3.23, 2.73 are the highway gears that many z28's have. I would never use these gears. You will never get your tires to spin again, and you gas mpg will drop in the city, but go up on the highway, and you car will feel very slow. Aso with the series carrier that 2.73's come with I don't think you can swap to a better ratio like 3.73 or 3.42. I'm not sure but thats what I have heard.
