I plan on changing the fluid in my transmision (automatic) and ive never done one before. So is there any tips you guys can give me and recommend any specific fluid brands? And im not 100% how many quarts the 4l60 is but from what i hear is about 8.

Autozone for a Haynes or Chilton's Manual. It tells the fluid recommendations, capacities, and how-to's.

it would be best to take it to a tranny shop and have it flushed. You cant get all the fluid out because some will stay in the torque converter and such. Also how many miles do you have on your car? if you have a lot of miles on you car and have never changed you fluid you should actually not change it. If you decide to change it yourself and it ends up smelling burnt you should stop and put everything back together with the old fuid and just top it off if you spill any out. Then take it to a tranny shop and ask them to see if your fluid can be changed or not.

my car has 97000 on it and i have no clue when the fluid was last changed or if it ever has, cuz im just going thru and changing all fluids and such cuz i recently got the car and am tryin to do a little preventitive maintnence. I think i will take it by a trany shop, just to be safe. And by the way i dont really understand why if the fluid gets really old its better not to change it? Ive heard somewhere before it might cause problems but dont have a clue as to why putting new fluid in would do that.

Seals will more then likely start leaking if flush a high millage tranny. I don't remeber exactly why this happens but it has something to do with the old fluid building up on those seals and when you take that out and put fresh fluid in it puts a lot of strain on them and they leak. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Honestly I wouldn't flush it, see what king of condition it's in, then maybe change the filter and add a bit of new fluid.

Yep, don't have that old tranny 'flusshed.' draining is ok.

T punk is also right about consulting a tranny shop to investigate the fluid.

It might be best to only drain 'some' of the fluid on old trannys that have not seen regular fluid changes. drain a few quarts out...and just put a few quarts back in. it can be done.
